Our Next Event

Event: An Evening with Sara Trevelyan.

Title: The Barlinnie Special Unit - The arts as a resource for self expression in prisons. How and why?

Chair: Phyllida Anam Aire, is a bereavement counsellor and the author of A Celtic Book of Dying.

Venue: Sanctuary, Augustine United Church, 41 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1EL.
Date: Wednesday 18 April 2018.
Time: Registration: 6.30pm-7pm. Event: 7pm-8.45pm
Event Description: Sara will reflect on her experiences of being a regular visitor to the Barlinnie Special Unit for 2 years at the end of the 1970s in the time leading up to her marriage to Jimmy Boyle. Sara is planning to invite a panel of others who also had experience of the BSU and who will be speaking as well. The relevance of this time of pioneering experimentation in the Scottish Prison continues to be a subject worth exploring. Although the Special Unit closed in 1994, after 20 years, the culture established there has helped to seed change in the rest of the system and the lessons learned are worth reflecting on.

Sara Trevelyan is a counsellor/psychotherapist and graduate in Barbara Brennan energy medicine, who has been living and practising in Edinburgh for 30 years. She was brought up in Australia, but returned to London to train in medicine in her early twenties. At the end of the seventies she moved to Inverness for a junior hospital job which was when she first visited Findhorn. She has written a memoir, Freedom Found, about her 20 year marriage to Jimmy Boyle who was a life sentence prisoner. As her marriage ended her spiritual journey took her back to Findhorn which she visits regularly and which continues to be her spiritual home.
